The Database World and Client/Server World expositions were held at the McCormick Place, Chicago, on December 7-11, 1992. There were over 10,000 attendees, over seventy-five exhibitors and over eighty conferences and presentations. Although this exposition appeared focused primarily for mainframe and minicomputer users (DB2 / SQL / Oracle) and downsizing/ right-sizing (how these applications are going to be transferred to microcomputers), multimedia was mentioned in most every seminar I attended. Everyone wants to use multimedia, it takes up huge amounts of storage space and people are trying to figure out the best way to store this multimedia information. Several products that will support "multi-media" data types (pictures, sounds and motion video) will be released or updated by the second quarter of 1993. They will allow you to store vast amount of clip art images, sound clips, video clips and MIDI files in new databases which can be sorted and accessed quickly, much like names or addresses are sorted and accessed in a typical mailing list database.
